Resources for Teachers

Being a teacher gives you extraordinary influence over the children in your class because they look up to you. And, you spend over 35 hours a week with them, which is a lot!

We know you want to be the best teacher that you can be, but we also know how busy you are. That’s why we created What to Say. It’s a simple way to get tips about how to discuss food, diet, and bodies with kids… emailed straight to you!

Once you sign the What to Say pledge, you join a community of adults dedicated to creating healthy environments for kids.

How can I talk about food in a healthy way for kids?

From breakfast and lunch to midday snacks, it’s likely you’re talking a lot about food during the school day! To create a safe environment for your students, follow these tips:

  • Don’t talk about weight around kids.
  • Focus on the value of food.
  • Avoid using food as a reward.
  • Steer clear of labeling food as good or bad.

What if a student is talking about weight or bodies negatively?

Students are curious. And they are quick to point out differences. So, it’s likely you’ll hear students talk about sizes, shapes, weights, dieting, and more. When this happens, we recommend redirecting the conversation back to something else more positive.

I’m concerned a student in my class is struggling with food and body? What do I do?

Eating disorders are serious. If you’re concerned, trust your gut. Reach out to the student’s parents separately, and do not discuss this in front of the student. Visit our Get Help page to learn more.

How can I promote a healthy world for all kids?

The first step is getting other adults involved. The more adults who know to focus on health–not size, shape, or weight– the better! We’ve made this easy for you. You can share our pledge, share our website, or download social media templates to share on your pages. You are our biggest advocate; thank you for bringing others on board!
